This book is a good read, especially for those who were in South Vietnam’s Northern I Corps area during the Vietnam War. I was in the Northwestern corner of South Vietnam from October of 1968 to October 1969 as a Marine Lieutenant and was on, and in between, many of the Fire Support Bases (FSB) and Landing Zones (LZ) mentioned. The majority of the accounts of action are from enlisted Marines, the PFC’s through Sergeants, who rarely get to tell their stories, even though they are the ones doing most of the fighting.The accounts of action display how young, talented, battle-hardened Marines took on and completed extremely difficult and dangerous tasks. For the enlisted Marines, everyday life, even when they weren’t being shot at by mortars and small arms, was very, very uncomfortable at best. One thing the accounts also bring home is the sense that the Marines felt they were doing something valuable. Exceptionally difficult, yes, but valuable, a fact that was lost on the American civilian anti-war mind-set of the 1960’s and 1970’s.So, Marines from LZ Sitting Duck, thank you for your exceptional courage; your stories are well worth reading.
