This is a great book if you want to get a more balanced view of what Jackie was like as a person. While she was married to JFK she was presented as a soft-spoken and fashionably dressed glamorous woman who redecorated the White House, and politically supported her husband. The Kennedy's were America's Royal Family..The author, Kitty Kelley, as a Washington journalist in the nation's capital, had covered the White House and Capitol Hill and developed access to valuable sources on the life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Many men and women who have always refused to be interviewed in the past agreed to see the author. Many Kennedy intimates spoke to her on the record and others exchanged their reminiscences for anonymityShe says of the book: "President Kennedy once said, "The greatest enemy of the truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest--but the myth--persistent, persuasive and unrealistic." In writing about Mrs. Onassis, I've tried to go beyond the myth of reality."Jackie Oh! is the first truly intimate biography of the complex and contradictory personality who is Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. The new public insights into this sometimes very private lady revealed from an intensive searching-out, including more than 300 interviews with friends and relatives.Brought up in socially impeccable, but by no means opulent surroundings, Jacqueline Bouvier began to experience wealth and prestige only upon her marriage to John F. Kennedy--a marriage which was one of convenience to both parties. Not in the least bit interested in politics, Jacqueline Kennedy nevertheless managed to bring considerable style to the \white House as the wife of a new kind of American president. Greatly admired as the President's young, attractive wife, she was idolized as his widow as she strove for a while to sustain the myth of Camelot. Her marriage to Aristotle Socrates Onassis exposed her feet of clay. Always changeable, sometimes incapable of following things through, she developed increasingly extravagant habits. Her overspending on clothing and jewelry, her restless pursuit of parties, and her fashionable globe-trotting became almost obsessive during her middle years of marriage to the Greek shipping magnate. In the beginning, Onassis indulged her every whim. After a few years, various events caused him to conclude with some bitterness that his marriage had been a great mistake. He planned divorce proceedings and took steps to insure that she would inherit no more than a modest share of his estate. Before any action could be taken, however, Onassis became ill. His wife, now openly disliked by the Onassis clan, was 3,000 miles away inn New York when he died. She knew he was ill and should have been at his side. A settlement of $26,0000,000 was finally made with her out of the Onassis estate.Jackie Oh! probes the enigma surrounding one of the truly legendary women of her century. It contains information never before made public about Jackie's relationship with her family, her marriage to John F. Kennedy and later to Aristotle Onassis. The sometimes bizarre behavior; the bitchy sense of humor that amuses and devastates; the whispery charm that captivates; and the temper that sometimes alienates are all captured in Jackie Oh!I won'/t get into it here, but there was a triangle relationship that broke up Onassis marriage, which he was devastated about. You can read about it in the book. He felt that he had been a fool and was used. That she was a cold-hearted and calculating woman who used him for his money. He had treated her like a wife-child and gave her everything; jewels, clothes and shoe shopping galore, She went shopping at the cost of $3,000 a minute! He gave her vacations, cruises, tours around the world, Rolls Royces, limos, bodyguards, etc.Towards the end of the book it shows how Jackie tricked Onassis' daughter, "Christina" into giving her $26,000,000, because Christina did not want to go to court and fight her. She just wanted to get rid of her. In the end, the whole Onassis family ends up hating Jackie for how she took advantage of Onassis and also how she was not present at his death. When she went to see him at the hospital before the burial (and he was dead) she never smiled or gave him a kiss. She just bowed her head and said a quick prayer and then left the room with a smile on her face. During the burial ceremony the book revealed Jackie also standing there with a smile on her face. No remorse or sadness are shone. The book reveals how possessed Jackie was in having money and she finally got it when Onassis died.So this woman went through her whole life without having to give account for some of the hurtful things that she had done to people and ended up being revered by the American people when she was no more a special woman than any others in the world today. That was the myth!
